👀 In the roller-coaster of AI, Cursor finds itself at an intriguing crossroads. With AI models like Anthropic's Opus 4.6 getting better and better, the humble AI code editor's role is being questioned. Cursor, once the fastest growing product ever, is now pivoting its focus towards developing the best coding model, not the collaborative tool you use a model in. Their massive valuation was always a puzzle of course...how could using a white label of someone else's model in a white label of VS Code be worth so valuable? Anyway an interesting side note on how Cursor are developing their model is that apparently they are taking a Qwen, Chinese open source model, and training it on proprietary i.e customer data...there are also allegations that Alibaba and other Chinese AI firms have allegedly created these models using NVIDIA GPUs (such as H200s) acquired through overseas data centre leases and middlemen to bypass export restrictions...wow...never a dull day on the AI hype train...
